Corey Minor Smith
General Counsel for Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority and Canton City Council Elect
Corey Minor Smith earned her Bachelor and Master degrees from Bowling Green State University. After earning her Juris Doctorate from the University of Toledo College of Law, Corey began her legal career as an Assistant Prosecutor. Currently, as General Counsel for Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority (SMHA), Corey represents SMHA on an array of complex legal, labor and contract matters.
Featured on television, radio and internet programs, Corey is a highly sought after thought leader on education, housing and mental health. Nationally, Corey presented for the Housing and Development Law Institute conference in Washington, DC. Internationally, Corey presented in Cape Town, South Africa during the Southern African Housing Foundation conference as a United States delegate.
Dedicated to community service, Corey is a board member of the Red Cross-Stark and Muskingum Lakes chapter and is a member of the Akron/Canton Barristers Association, the Honorable Judge Ira Turpin Scholars Recognition Committee and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated-Stark County Alumnae Chapter. After graduating from the Leadership Stark County Government Academy, Corey was the first African American female to be a candidate for Canton Municipal Court Judge. Subsequently, she was elected to the Canton City Schools Board of Education. Recently, out of eight candidates, Corey was named the number one vote getter for the Canton City Council at Large May 2, 2017 primary election.
Corey received a number of awards throughout her career. Some include being named one of Stark County’s Twenty Under 40! and an ATHENA International Women’s Leadership Finalist. The Boy Scouts of America Buckeye Council honored Corey with the Spirit of Scouting Award, she was inducted into the Canton YWCA Women’s Hall of Fame, Class of 2016 and on May 20, 2017, the Mary Church Terrell Federated Women’s Club awarded Corey with Paralee W. Compton’s Beautiful People Award.
